Susie Bubble on Why Haute Couture Inspires Her and What She'll Wear to the Shows

Susie Bubble on Why Haute Couture Inspires

Susie Lau, better known as Susie Bubble, is perhaps best known for championing young designers, but she has firmly established herself fluent in the language of couture. “I think there’s still a fantasy element to haute couture that makes it the pinnacle of fashion,” says Bubble. “In an age when fashion is so readily available in many guises and forms, haute couture with its petite mains, time-consuming processes, and ateliers is the diametric opposite of fast and accessible fashion.” As a longtime forum observer who “loved geeking out on the Fashion Spot” before she started her blog, Style Bubble, Bubble has excellent recall, freely detailing her favorite moments of couture’s history, spanning from Yves Saint Laurent’s 1976 Ballets Russes–inspired collection to the “technically revolutionary” designs of Madame Grès.
As for her couture week wardrobe, don’t expect to see Bubble in any head-to-toe runway looks. “I doubt I’d ever be trussed up in Dior/Chanel to go to their shows, so it’s not so much of an issue for me,” says Bubble. “If you’re an ambassador of a brand, that’s fair enough. For the rest of us mere mortals, though, we have to make do with our own clothes.” In classic Bubble style, her suitcase is packed with a blend of fun and functional pieces, including a pair of Dior embellished sneakers “to run around appointments in,” a vintage cheongsam dress, and a Tome trench. As if we would expect any less: “As y’all know, I see no crime in dressing up for the shows.”
